The devil has been effective in trying to destroy God’s awesome creation since the beginning – from Genesis 3 as previously mentioned. Throughout all Old Testament history, the devil has hated God’s creation and tempted and led astray almost all people with whom he had contact. From the time of Samuel, we see Samuel’s sons destroyed by the devil, along with the evil reigns of 19 evil kings before Israel and Judah went into their relative captivities. All this history in the Old Covenant was the time of ante-Christ, before Jesus came into His world. Remember:

Malachi 2.16 – 3.5

“…guard yourself in your spirit, and do not break faith. You have wearied the Lord with your words. “How have we wearied him?” you ask. By saying, “All who do evil are good in the eyes of the Lord , and he is pleased with them” or “Where is the God of justice?” “See, I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before me. Then suddenly the Lord you are seeking will come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, will come,” says the Lord Almighty. But who can endure the day of his coming? Who can stand when he appears? For he will be like a refiner’s fire or a launderer’s soap. He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; he will purify the Levites and refine them like gold and silver. Then the Lord will have men who will bring offerings in righteousness, and the offerings of Judah and Jerusalem will be acceptable to the Lord , as in days gone by, as in former years. “So I will come near to you for judgment. I will be quick to testify against sorcerers, adulterers and perjurers…”

Malachi 4.5

“See, I will send you the prophet Elijah before that great and dreadful day of the Lord comes.

In the above truth, the Messenger who prepared the way is John the Baptist, the new Elijah, and the Messenger of the New Covenant is the Anointed One, the Messiah, the Christ Jesus.

And the new Elijah, John the Baptist and Jesus came:

Mark 1.1-5, 7-13

“The beginning of the gospel about Jesus Christ, the Son of God. It is written in Isaiah the prophet: “I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way” – “a voice of one calling in the desert, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.’ ” And so John came, baptizing in the desert region and preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. And this was his message: “After me will come one more powerful than I, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. As Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.” At once the Spirit sent him out into the desert, and he was in the desert forty days, being tempted by Satan…”

It is so important to read and study Holy Scripture. From the above truth we see Jesus being led to be tempted by the devil. Jesus is the Eternal Second Person of the Trinity in His Second Nature His Humanity. In the next Scripture we see Him being tested by the devil:

Matthew 4.1-11

“Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ ” Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written: ” ‘He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’ ” Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’

“Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendour. “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.” Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’ ” Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.”
